Background:

This material is for a class that I’m teaching called “Reading and Writing Through Business Content.” This class is a low-intermediate class at a community college. We meet four days each week for a total of six hours of instruction.

 

The following are some ways that I would modify the class if it were on-line.

 

Focus:

The focus of this lesson is Marketing.

 

Goal:

To have students read two readings (The Four P’s and Target Marketing) from our book __Business Concepts for English Practice__, and then answer the comprehension and vocabulary questions.

To have students write a descriptive paragraph about an advertisement of their choosing.

 

Objectives:

Students should write descriptive paragraphs about advertisements that they have chosen.

Students should have an understanding of the new vocabulary from the readings.

 

Procedure:

Prereading and vocabulary activities for The Four P’s.

 

I will use a Wiki and put students into groups of 4. They will have to complete the word form chart together. They will then need to choose 10 words and write sentences. They will be able to edit each others work and make certain that it is correct. They will post their final project to the class Wiki for all to see.

Students will have additional opportunities to practice the new vocabulary by completing a crossword puzzle

 

 

And a Fill-in-the-Missing Word activity.

Writing a descriptive paragraph:Students can choose an ad from one of the following sites (or one of their own). They need to write about the ad. The following info should be included: a short description of the ad, the intended audience, what senses it appeals to, and is it an effective ad. They should e-mail me the ad and the paragraph. They should also share it with their classmates in their group Wiki. The group members should edit the paragraph for correct grammar including punctuation, subject-verb agreement, capitalization, article use and spelling. They can refer to: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/grammar/ if they have grammar questions.
